Press Release - March 2008

The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) has positioned itself at the forefront of the rebirth of boating in Malaysia. In line with the government’s aim of promoting Langkawi, the Melewar Group under the stewardship of Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah, developed the Langkawi Yacht Club and the club opened its doors in 1996, with a berthing capacity of 44 berths.

Since its opening in 1996, the club, which is situated by the ferry port in the main town of Kuah on Langkawi’s southeast coast, has grown in tandem with the island’s development and emerged as the heart of sailing on Peninsular Malaysia’s northwest coast. Langkawi and its legendary 99 islands are long known as a premier cruising destination for yachtsmen sailing across the Straits of Malacca.

In 1999, the club was bestowed with the “Royal” conferment by HRH Sultan of Kedah, who is also the Royal Patron of the Club.

RLYC has an imposing yet elegant structure. The unique, rising roof, much like the shape of a ship’s hull pointing towards the open sea was specially designed to house the main clubhouse. From the veranda, you are privileged to view gleaming luxury crafts and powerboats, floating almost, on the azure blue sea spanning the horizon. Her architect has cleverly used the natural landscape to great advantage.

Intended to be a marina first before anything else, the complete range of facilities provided within the club is of international standards. The club provides 8 wet berths to dock ocean-going masterpieces, including 150-foot yachts. No cost has been spared in ensuring the best pontoons were installed with additional service such as direct supply of electricity, water and fuel to the boats. People who want to berth their boats are assured of 24 hours security patrols. The club also provides postal and parcel service, locker room and port clearance services.

Apart from providing the required facilities under a Marina status, the club has hosted yearly regatta with the collaboration from other yacht clubs in Malaysia. Our aim is to promote to the international regatta participants the safety of our waters, the natural sea winds and the beauty of our islands. RLYC has also on many occasions participated in international boat shows around this region and to secure for overseas affiliation, international members and also to source for new opportunities.

Royal Langkawi Yacht Club’s facilities have expanded over the years, and a sea wall was completed in November 2002 to offset the problems of waves from increasing ferry traffic to the island. There are now 200 wet berths in front of the distinctive, open-designed clubhouse, which features the popular Charlie’s Place Restaurant & Bar and a swimming pool on the bottom deck, and the Captain’s Deck Bar & Grill on the second floor, all overlooking the sea and Pulau Dayang Bunting (Pregnant Maiden Island).

Facilities provided and available for the marina and its guests:

  • Maintenance service such as boat and hull cleaning, engine tuning and repairs, recharging batteries, etc.
  • Easy access to local authorities for Port Clearance, Marine Department, Immigration & Customs.
  • Electricity, water, diesel, telephone and fax services.
  • Wireless Internet services.

The RLYC restaurants have also been a famous dining spot on the island of Langkawi with thousands of visitors, both local and international dining in at our restaurants yearly. Our catering team has also have had attended to many functions, themed parties and private island caterings, to the need for each and every guests that intends to organize a special and memorable occasion.

The club’s reputation has grown by hosting the annual Royal Langkawi International Regatta, which has emerged as one of the major events on the Asian sailing calendar since its debut in 2003. Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, then Acting Prime Minister, launched the regatta, while in 2004 and 2005, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former Prime Minister, handed out awards on the final night’s prize giving. In 2006 and 2007, the final prize presentation was graced by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. In 2008, the Tourism Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was the Guest of Honour, representing the government of Malaysia. He presented the prizes to the overall winners of RLIR 2008.

Our aggressive promotion has resulted in attracting business giants like Sunsail U.K., the biggest bare-boat charter company to invest in our club via expanding their bare-boat fleet to be permanently based here. This partnership alone has the promise of guaranteeing approximately 1500 – 2000 tourists from Europe to visit Langkawi Island yearly. This region, according to Sunsail, has the definite potential of growth given the proper support from the government and full cooperation from private owned businesses. This region has everything working for it such as natural resources, natural beauty, friendly inhabitants, extensive infrastructure, diversified cultures, and most importantly as a value for money destination. All the ingredients needed to develop this area into a leading sailing destination are there, it is just an issue of selling the packages across the target markets.

Boat charters are available through the club as well as Sunsail UK and Simpson Marine (Yacht Brokerage), both of whom have their Langkawi operations based at the club, while the Sea Sports Centre offers diving and snorkelling excursions, island excursions and more.

The club is also a good base for getting supplies, as it’s just a five-minute drive from the centre of Kuah, where you can stock up on duty-free goods.

RLYC Resort Hotel

The RLYC hotel project is among the future development plans to turn the marina into a resort. It will be a 72-room hotel located adjacent to the RLYC. All 72 rooms are sea and marina facing. The proposed hotel will sit on a waterfront, as it will be a 2-storey hotel block with 36 rooms on each floor. Each room sizes are built to ensure that sufficient room for guest to relax and enjoy their Langkawi experience. The average room size without the balcony will be 380 square feet and with balcony, the size adds up to almost 480 square feet.
