The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) is located in the legendary island of Langkawi in Kedah, Malaysia and the club is a premier cruising destination and popular choice for yachtsmen sailing across the Straits of Malacca.
ROYAL LANGKAWI YACHT CLUB – The outlook of future…
Intended to be a marina first before anything else, the RLYC offers world class facilities where 8 out of its 200 wet berths are well equipped to dock ocean-going masterpieces, including 150-foot yachts.
No costs have been spared to ensure that the best pontoons were installed with each providing additional facilities such as direct electricity supply, water and fuel to the boats. Those berthing their boats are also assured of 24 hours security patrols while the club also provides postal and parcel as well as port clearance services.
Another major attraction at the club is the RLYC’s restaurants which are famous dining choices for both local and international visitors. The popular Charlie’s Place Restaurant & Bar is located on the bottom deck while the Captain’s Deck Bar & Grill is on the second floor, both offering breathtaking, sunset views of the sea and tourist haunt, “Pulau Dayang Bunting” or Pregnant Maiden Island.
The restaurants cater to thousands of new and regular patrons all year round. Its experienced and reliable catering team can easily put together any function, themed parties, pool side events and private island catering suited and tailored to the needs of any guests who want to organise a special, memorable occasion.
Visitors to the club will be amazed by the club’s imposing yet elegant structure. The unique, rising roof, much like the shape of a ship’s hull pointing towards the open sea is specially designed to house the main clubhouse. From the veranda, spans a view of gleaming luxury crafts and powerboats, floating almost, on the azure blue sea spanning the horizon. Her architect has cleverly used the natural landscape to great advantage.
The RLYC was known as the Langkawi Yacht Club when it first opened its doors in 1996 and three years later, in 1999, the club was bestowed with the “Royal” conferment by HRH Sultan of Kedah, who is also the Royal Patron of the club.
Since it began hosting the annual Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR), the club’s reputation has grown tremendously. The inaugural event was held in 2003 and with 8 successful regattas organised to date, the RLIR is today one of the major events on the Asian sailing calendar.
Preparations are already well under way for the RLIR 2011 which will take place from 11 – 15 January. Teams participating in the regatta will compete for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy, “LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy”, Langkawi Sports Trophy, the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup and Commodore’s Challenge Cup.
In April 2008, the club was recognised for its efforts when the RLYC was awarded the Best Asian Marine/Yacht Club of the Year award in the prestigious Christofle Asia Boating Awards in Shanghai. It was a major milestone for the club as it was the first time a Malaysian yacht club was bestowed the award since the annual awards ceremony was first held in 2005. In 2007-2008, Royal Langkawi Yacht Club has been awarded The Best Marina/Yacht Club by The Brand Laureate.
Such recognition from a renowned, domestic and international body are indeed a wonderful tribute to the club and RLYC’s dreams to be club that meets world class standards were finally realised.
